An author of popular women’s Bible studies is to speak in the Worcester diocese next week.
Lisa Brenninkmeyer is talking about “Between Heartbreak & Hallelujah: There is Holiness in the Waiting” at 7 p.m. Oct. 23 at St. Joseph Parish in Charlton. She is founder and CEO of Walking with Purpose, a Catholic apostolate that develops Bible studies for women and girls. Following the talk is a reception with book-signings and refreshments. All women are welcome. The cost is $25 per person. Registration is via the website walkingwithpurpose.com/events.
St. Joseph parishioner Christina Mullen, co-coordinator WWP Charlton with Lynn Lorusso and Pamela Hamilton, explained how this unexpected opportunity arose.
In the fall of 2023 these local Catholics and others were reading a Walking with Purpose Bible study book, and discussing it in their prayer group, when they felt called to share it with St. Joseph’s Parish.
They connected with the Walking with Purpose support system and got permission from the pastor, Father Robert A. Grattaroti, to offer Bible studies through the parish.
In early 2024, nearly 80 women participated in the first WWP Bible study they offered, Mrs. Hamilton said. The parish is now doing its third Bible study.
The Bible studies involve 10-15 minutes of daily Scripture study, reading and answering questions at home; weekly small discussion groups at church, and video talks. The books brought so many blessings that Mrs. Mullen said she invited Ms. Brenninkmeyer to speak at St. Joseph’s.
"It was a long shot, as I knew she mostly did national events, but I felt called to try,” she said.
“I filled out the request on the website, gave a lot of detail about our parish and [noted] that we are celebrating out 125th parish anniversary. ... I ... prayed. ... I didn't even tell my co-coordinators ... When I received the call this past spring that she was interested, no one could believe it, including me!"
